Onwards to Auckland here we titillated our van until she shone with pride ready for the car market on Sunday morning. This was an immense affair with masses of car owners eagerly awaiting a potential punter. Prices ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars. With all the other vans on sale we thought the chance of selling her was thin, then a like minded kiwi fell in love with her smooth lines revolving seats and purr of the exhaust (good job we got it fixed!). Relieved with the sale we settled in for a few nights at the Bamber House backpackers, here you can enjoy the life in the city but still retain a sense of calm in their pool or lounging on there lawn. This area, Mt Eden is a hip hangout with many bars cafes and restaurants as well as another award winning bookshop. The City itself is only a walk into town where you can shop till you drop and feast forever in the vast eateries lining both street and sea. The harbour here is overlooked by some prime real estate sophisticated restaurants and expensive hotels. You can experience this part of town specially remodelled for the 1999/2000 Americas Cup by joining a sailing ship around the harbour. Here you can play yachtsman for the princely sum of 125 dollars for two hours. Auckland is known as the City of the South Pacific, where cultures intertwine everywhere you look, from performances on street corners to the delicious Pacific Rim cuisine on offer at every price. Incidentally in Auckland at the top of Mt Eden Road we found real beer no bubbles, just lovely hoppy taste. Taught by a Kentish master the owner now brews this delight proudly on the premises at Galbraiths. Home sick? No not really - simply enjoyed a glass or two before embarking on our next adventure to South America. [« Prev] [Next »]
