Walking Home

On Sunday 13th 2001 our two intrepid walkers took their first steps. They previously trained in torrents of rain, so this left them completely unprepared for the near tropical climate that lay ahead.

Graham’s feet suffered, even his blisters had blisters. Garry had problems not with his feet but his head, which can only be described as follicly challenged forcing him to wear a hat virtually all day long. Still they soldiered on for some welcome shelter and cool liquid refreshment.

On Saturday 19th May they completed their journey covering 165 miles with an average mileage of 23.6 miles a day. They arrived at the Vernon Arms in Hanbury at 5:00 pm on Saturday where friends and family including Graham's Mum and Dad waited with a well-deserved pint. The celebrations continued into the evening with a welcome home party and some surprise visits from old friends that the lads had not seen for several years.

Both Garry and Graham were staggered with the amount of support they received from the local community, friends and family. They never dreamt that the walk would raise so much money and would like to thank all those who sponsored and supported them. Special thanks goes to Angie and Trevor of the Crown Inn Crewkerne (offical HQ), who raised both funds and spirits. Also to Mary Wigman and her team of volunteers at the Save The Children charity shop Crewkerne.
