Crewkerne to IgnyThree budding middle-ageing musketeers Graham Barley, Terry Oliver and Garry Bourne completed an epic walk from Crewkerne, Somerset to its twin town of Igny near Paris and raised £2600 for the charity Macmillan Cancer Relief. Graham, Garry and Terry started the walk on the 1st September 2002 and passed through the very heart of Dorset and Normandy. The lads finished three weeks and 310 miles later on the 21st, averaging 15.5 miles a day and only suffered minor blisters. The walk was orgainised with the help of the Crewkerne and District Twinning Association and their Igny counterparts. These 'last of the summer wine' adventurers started from Crewkerne and made there way cross-country through the hidden combes and tumbling hills of Dorset to Weymouth where they crossed the Channel to St Malo. Once in France their journey headed east retracing an old pilgrim's path that links Paris with Mont San Michel taking them within a few kilometres of Igny. From that point they were met by Igny ramblers who guided them the last few miles to Igny for an official welcome at the town centre. Macmillan Cancer Relief has special significance to the team as Terry has recent experience of Cancer and found the charity's support invaluable, so all were determined to raise as much sponsorship as possible. This determination was multiplied ten fold by the good efforts and welcome support of the Crewkerne and District Twinning Association Special thanks to:- |
